FIESTA: CELEBRATING IT SAFELY AMIDST GREAT CRISIS

The Vigan City Fiesta is celebrated on January 25th each year. It is held on the feast day of St. Paul the Apostle's conversion. St. Paul is Vigan City’s patron saint. Biguenos from all over the nation and even from abroad return to Vigan, as it is customary for Filipinos to return to their hometown to celebrate their fiesta with their family and friends. Thousands of people from other regions of the Philippines and other nations join them in enjoying the cultural events, parades, and street dancing organized by the local government with the assistance of local enterprises and communities. There are also culinary festivals, art and craft shows, and a touring carnival. Participants from the different neighboring provinces in the northern region are also sent to compete in the various games and activities, particularly the street dancing competition. This participation by other municipalities makes the Vigan City Fiesta not only a local event participated in by Vigan’s officials, but a national event participated in by other local public heads and national officials. Because of the global epidemic, this year's Vigan Town Fiesta is substantially different from previous years. However, the city government of Vigan discovered a means to make the celebration possible, even if it is in a new regular kind of celebration.

The celebration of the events in Vigan city fiesta has changed a lot when the pandemic entered the country. To assure the safety of all Biguenios, the city government prepared at least a low-key festival. The city administration places a premium on social distance and hygiene norms. For coronavirus protection, everyone must follow all hygiene measures. Washing hands often, wearing masks, and using hand sanitizer are just a few of the health and safety precautions they must take to protect the safety of everyone at the event. Celebration is all about unity. Every person should try to adjust to this new normal.

In addition to that, I am very pleased and happy because the authorities still found a way how to celebrate this important occasion because celebrating festivals are still important amidst pandemic. Accepting the truth of our circumstances allows us to cope with this new normal. We must bridge the gap between our aspirations of a flawless celebration and the reality of what may occur; if we can accomplish this, we will be able to plan how to balance safety with celebration.

We may not be celebrating these events the way we used to, we should still be thankful that they found a way how to celebrate this important event. The purpose of a celebration is to bring people together. Everyone should make an effort to adjust to this new normal. What matters is that we are all happy and we are all safe while we celebrate this fiesta.
